A Blessing Through Tragedy’s Regretful Fulfillments

Being once called My Dying Regrets but changed their name to their new calling A Blessing Through Tragedy or A.B.T.T. is a band based out of Northridge, California, the band didn't get serious until the summer of August 2009 but after just 2 years the band had their minds set on where they wanted this to end up. So with that said the band has released their single "Where Are the Fans" which was just released at their previous showcase, so the band will soon be releasing an EP of the same name, which will include four songs that will knock your socks off.  A.B.T.T. caught up with me and discussed what they have planned, how they came to be, and what’s hidden in between.

1. First off, was the band once named My Dying Regrets?

Yes the band was first named My Dying Regrets but was changed in January 2010 because of the band Dying Regret. We didn’t want to build up a reputation with a band name that would eventually have to be changed.

2. How did the band come up with the name 'A Blessing Through Tragedy'?

A long argument between abide in the masses and a blessed tragedy was going on and we eventually settled with A Blessing Through Tragedy.

3. Where is the band from and what is the music scene like there?

The band practices in Northridge, California so we say were from Northridge even though everyone lives in different places. The music scene around us is a mixed variety or metal and rock with a little punk in-between, we have so many friends in bands and this is pretty much the genre that we see and hear about.

4. How long has the band been around?

The band was formed in early 2009 but didn’t get serious until about August 2009.

5. Is the band close to getting signed or are you still in the waiting pool?

We would love to be signed but we’re still waiting for the opportunity.

6. What about recording, you've done a single sampler for the song 'Where Are The Fans", when can we expect a demo or EP release?

“Where Are the Fans” was just released at our Whisky show and that will also be the name of the EP, the EP will also include four more songs. We’re hoping to release the EP as soon as possible but as of now there is no release date set.

7. Who writes your songs and what inspires you?

Everyone in the band writes the songs. Most of the time Kory and Matt start out with a few ideas and josh will get a beat going along with Jordan and once there is a general idea for the song Rob will start to write lyrics. The biggest influence of the band is Avenged Sevenfold but we also have others influences like Asking Alexandria, Bullet for My Valentine, August Burns Red and Woe, Is Me.

8. If you weren't a musician what would you be?

Rob: I’d be a football player.
Matt: I’d be a baseball player.
Josh: I’ve always wanted to be an artist.
Kory: I would also have to agree with becoming an artist.
Jordan: I think being a movie director would be a great experience.

9. What is the best and worst thing about being in a band?

The best part about being in a band is probably seeing people go crazy when they hear your music and them telling you how good the show was and this just makes you feel amazing. So far we haven’t found anything bad about being in a band.

10. What did you do before you became musicians?

Rob: I played football.
Matt: I played baseball for about 5 or 6 years.
Josh: I played baseball.
Kory: I played basketball and did some art to pass the time.
Jordan: I was busy being a 6th grader. (Laughs)

11. Do you have any "before the show" rituals?

Rob: I like to buy Fuji water.

The rest of us just get up on stage and do our thing.

12. Will we be seeing you playing more shows this year?

Yes definitely. We want to start doing at least one show a month and work our way up to more and more shows every month. We will be taking every opportunity that comes our way.

13. Do you have to play the same songs every night or do you get to toss them up?

At the moment we have only five originals and most of the time we are given just a 25 min set so it works out perfect but we have a couple more originals that are on their way to being done and they will be put into the set.

14. How can fans get in contact with you?

Fans can reach us at:

We’re starting a mailing list so just send us an email and we’ll put you in our contacts and it will insure that you always know what is going on with the band.

15. Do you have anything else you'd like to add or say?

We would like to say thanks to everyone who has given the band support and gone to the shows.
